Good luck Sunderland!

5th December 2017

NGCV is supporting Sunderland for its bid to be UK City of Culture in 2021 and we are encouraging everyone to support them today, when the focus is on Sunderland in the run up to the announcement on Thursday.

The Final Countdown

This is it, the last few days until we find out who will be awarded the UK City of Culture 2021 title. The announcement will be made live on BBC’s The One Show between 7-7.30pm on Thursday 7th December. There will be representatives from Sunderland and the 2021 bid on the show, so please tune in and show lots of support for the city.

Prior to the announcement, on Thursday morning the bid team will be in Hull, the current UK City of Culture, to present Sunderland’s case to the judging panel. We wish them the very best of luck.

Help Sunderland take over social media

On Tuesday 5th December, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport will be showcasing Sunderland on social media from 9am-5pm, via their Twitter, Facebook and Instagram channels. They will be sharing facts, images and GIFs, celebrating what makes Sunderland unique and encouraging others to get involved.

This is our chance to officially show the DCMS how proud and passionate the people of Sunderland and the wider region are. Here is how you can help:

  • Starting at 9.00am, please post as much as possible about what makes Sunderland so special and why it should win UK City of Culture
  • Make sure you use #Sunderland2021 and #CityofCulture2021 across all your posts, and tag/follow @DCMS
  • Share your favourite photos of the city. We know there are some beautiful images out there that we’d love to reach a wider audience!
  • Record video messages of support and tag us in them
  • Share our official bid film ‘Sunderland: We are Makers’
  • Share this email with EVERYONE and encourage all of your friends, family and colleagues to do the same
  • This is going to last all day so please keep the momentum up by sharing and posting as much as you feel comfortable.
  • You can also add a Sunderland 2021 Twibbon to your profile photo by going to this link here

Remember, whatever you post, please use the hashtags #Sunderland2021 and #CityofCulture2021 across all your posts, and tag/follow @DCMS

Social media has played a huge part in this campaign as it’s a really clear and direct way of demonstrating our passionate belief to the decision makers of this competition.

During the days Sunderland submitted our first and second stage bids in April and September, they collectively got #Sunderland2021 trending nationally with over 2.5 million impressions on each occasion.

When the judges visited last month they did it again and got #WelcometoSunderland trending 2nd in the UK for nearly 7 hours! They caught the attention of Huffington Post who wrote an article about our pride.

They’ve done it before, so let’s help them do it again today when all eyes will be on Sunderland.  Help them make some noise and get #Sunderland2021 trending.

Sunderland is in this competition to win it, however, whatever the result may be on Thursday, this is certainly not the end. The Sunderland 2021 team would like to thank everyone for being so supportive throughout this process.  They say it has been really overwhelming to see so many people get behind the city and thank everyone wholeheartedly. This is the start of something very special for Sunderland.

Together we can win this!
